Vi-own-YAY

Two gorgeous fall days have been filled with gorgeous fall hikes!

Tate and I were up for a little exploring yesterday afternoon and found this awesome system of trails less than 10 minutes from our house!

We crunched up the mountain a mile or so and came out at Carter Mountain Orchard.  This is the same company/family that owns Chiles Peach Orchard, where I work, but it was the first time I made it up there.  The views were spectacular!  Charlottesville is right on the edge of the Piedmont Region and if you look to the East it is flat for as far as you can see!

We noticed that we were close to Jefferson Vineyards and decided it was as good a time as any for a little wine tasting.

(It looks like someone threw a handful of grapes at that sign!)

The tasting included at least 8 wines.

This is a mighty fine Viognier, my friends, mighty fine.

It seems standard in Virginia that wine tastings are about $5 and you get to keep your wine glass.  In the Willamette Valley where we went tasting many times from Portland more of the vineyards offered complimentary tastings or would waive the fee with a purchase.  Free is certainly nice but it’s kind of fun to have souvenir glasses and the few tastings I’ve done have been extensive, at least 8 wines.

These dark evenings are so hard on my motivation!  We got home last night just before 5 and I had to keep telling myself that it was “only” 5pm, not time to throw in the towel and curl up on the couch yet.  So I did a lovely 35 minutes of yoga and then hit the couch ;).

This afternoon I met two girl-friends and their cute-cute-cute babies for another hike.  We covered a leisurely 3 miles or so along the Monticello-Saunders trial system.

I am SO thrilled to have wooded hiking so close to home!

Time to pack, I am making a last minute trip to Florida this weekend to visit my grandfather as he recovers from open heart surgery and keep my grandma company.  I am really looking forward to seeing both of them and am glad that I am able to make the trip.

After work tomorrow I am driving to West Virginia to see my sister perform in a dance concert and then leaving from there on Saturday morning.  I will be in Florida until Thursday.   Besides the pleasure of seeing my grandparents I am going to see one of my dear friends from when I lived in Peru, she now lives in West Palm Beach.  She’s had a baby since I last saw her and I can’t wait to meet him!

I am hoping to sneak in a run on the beach also but we’ll see how it all plays out.

Gotta pack because we are going to see David Dorfman Dance tonight at UVA!

Exploring Home

I am so glad I spent lots of time outside yesterday soaking up the sun and yummy vitamin D because today is GRAY!

Around noon yesterday Tate and I went out for a little exploring. Even though we grew up just across the border in West Virginia, neither of us have spent much time in Virginia.  It is gorgeous here!  And there is tons to do!

We started out by driving west to the northern end of the Blue Ridge Parkway for a little hike.

It was an absolutely beautiful fall day but very crisp!  I don’t think it broke 40 degrees up on the Parkway.

Luckily, these stairs warmed us up 😉

We hiked up to Humpback Rocks.  It was a really short hike (2.3 miles from the Visitor Center) but really nice and the view from the top was spectacular.  Hiking is one of my absolutely favorite forms of exercise and it had been way to long since I did it.

Just as I was thinking what an amazing spot this would be for a proposal, two folks showed up with a camera and a backpack-full of flowers.  They were setting the scene for a friend of theirs who was on his way up with his girlfriend…to propose!  We were tempted to stick around and rubberneck but they said it would be about a half an hour before they made it up.  We passed them on the way down and I had to bite my tongue to keep from spilling the beans!

Next time I would like to do the longer loop, I think it’s just over 4 miles.  We had an agenda to keep though.  Shopping!  This wasn’t actually in the plans but we were so close to Waynesboro that we decided to duck into Target and Ross.  Even though I desperately need some new clothes I am much more interested in shopping for household items instead.  Or beauty products.  I am slightly obsessed with lotions right now and have about 6 different ones opened!

By the time we left the shopping center we were both feeling the late afternoon sleepies but decided we still had it in us for one wine tasting.

King Family Vineyards is located just outside of Crozet and has a lovely tasting room, a nice patio, and a polo field!  From summer-early fall they have polo matches every week.  Attendance is free and you can bring a picnic but you have to buy your booze from them (naturally).  Tate and I are definitely on for this next season!

We tasted 7 or 8 delicious wines.  Everything was good but the only one that really stood out to us was the Port called 7 (Tate’s holding the bottle).

I think their wines are a bit high priced, everything on the tasting menu was $22 a bottle and up.  My wine splurges these days are more in the $12-16 range with an “every night” bottle going for $6-10.  There are a lot of very decent wines in this range, especially if you shop the sales at World Market or Market Street Wineshop (a C’ville local).

In case you need yet another reason to make yoga a regular fixture in you life, here you go.  This Runner’s World article explains the correlation between lasting weight loss and yoga.  It’s all about the mindfulness people! 🙂

Speaking of mindfulness, I am so ready for my daily yoga!  I am going to do this practice for the first time from exercisetv .

Are you a regular yogi?  If so, have you noticed if your yoga practice has an impact on your approach to eating?
