Be Yourself

“In a world where you can be anything, be yourself” Etta Turner

What a lovely motto, no?  It was a nice little reminder this morning, in the form of a bumper sticker, to respect myself and others for the unique qualities that make us, well, us!

Practicing yoga gives me that reminder also.  Namaste, said at the end of most classes and practices, has many translations but my favorite is “the light in me salutes the light in you”.  Speaking of yoga, my abs are sore from yesterdays practice!

And today’s practice had loads of ab work also, love it!  Yoga today was this 45 minute practice from exercisetv and I really enjoyed it.  It is challenging, has a great flow, good instruction, and tons of twists, balances, and planks.  The only thing I didn’t care for is that the music is kinda bad and the lack of savasana at the end.

After yoga I hightailed it over to C’ville Coffee to make a new friend.

I struck up a conversation with Anna at work at the orchard last week after noticing that she had Oregon license plates.  Turns out she is living here and we seemed to have a lot in common.   When I mentioned that Tate and I are very new to town and still trying to meet people and form a community she suggested we hang out.  I got used to this kind of friend-making process in Peru, my closest friend there (and still near and dear) and I exchanged numbers at a party without really talking and then basically went on a “get to know each other ” lunch date.  It’s so fun to make new friend’s!

Coffee talk with Anna and her sweet baby girl was really nice and I loved hearing her talk about how much she’s enjoyed living in C’ville.

Tate talked me into a late afternoon run and we did 4.55 miles.  My ipod ran out of battery literally 5 seconds into the run!  Doh!  I almost turned around then and there.  But I persevered and even managed to bang out 10 sets of sprints mid-way.  I lost my watch in our move so lately I have been using my ipod to track sprinting times, without either I had to get creative.  First, I tried sprinting blocks but the blocks were really uneven.  Then I started counting my steps and you know what?  It made me run faster!  I sprinted for 60 steps then returned to a comfortable jog until my heart rate slowed down (a minute or two depending on the incline).  This technique worked really well and I think I will repeat it even if I have a timepiece at my disposal.

Time for a speedy round of cleaning house in preparation for some very special house-guests arriving tomorrow!

I Feel Hardcore

I did it!  I got out of bed at 7:30am (with the help of a wake up call and coffee delivery by my awesome husband) to go running.  It’s not that 7:30 is an early rise but when you’ve got the day off and it’s 35 degrees out at that hour it can be a little hard to motivate.

I did not, however, do 8 miles.  I cleverly planned a route that started with Kath and Matt leaving their house, running 1.5 miles to our house, picking us up, running nearly 5 together, then splitting for them to complete a total of 8 and Tate and I 5.  Since Kath ♥’s the hills there was many an incline!  (Sorry Kath!)

Once we got moving the temperature didn’t bother me at all, in fact I liked it.

As soon as we got home I hit the mat for some yoga.  I did about 20 minutes of this flow, with a few additions.  MISSION: Yoga 5 for 5 is going great.  Last week I did one class, three dvd’s, and one self-led practice.  This week I plan on two self-led practices, two dvd’s, and a podcast.  I have never tried a yoga podcast but I have heard lots of great reviews of Dave Farmer so I think I will start there.

I didn’t realize it was going to frost so hard last night and I feel like a jerk for leaving my little baby greens out!

They are probably done for.  Shoot.

Off to play in the sunshine!  Tate and I have a big day planned of scenic driving, hiking, and wine tasting.
