So Soda Crazy

“Rain, sleet, freezing rain, snow…”

Yep, still January!

I just got my butt kicked in Pilates Reformer class.  It was a new-to-me teacher and she was super tough, 2/3rds of the class was leg work! Ugh!  I love it though, I feel so amazing when I walk out of there, strong, lean, and flexible.

Someday I will teach Pilates Reformer and have access to Reformers all the time!

The training to teach Reformer is extensive and expensive so for now (well, once my gym membership is up next week) I will settle for teaching and doing Mat Pilates. 😦  (Which I also LOVE.)

It’s official.  I am obsessed with Water Kefir Soda.

One of the reasons I wanted to get to Ikea on Saturday was to pick up some bottles for my soda!

Vanilla on the left and grape on right.

Oh but wait, there’s more.

Yeah, it’s a little out of control.  For real.

That chunky stuff on the bottom right is ginger.  Mmmmmm homemade Ginger Ale.  I’ve also made Lemonade, Grape-Vanilla, and Coconut (yuck).

Wondering what’s the deal with this stuff?

It is a fermented soda made with Water Kefir Grains

These “grains” have the power to turn sugar water into a probiotic rich beverage.

Probiotics is a catchall term for thousands of live microorganisms that deliver a myriad of health benefits.  Basically it means that it is full of healthy, live bacteria that promotes gut health.  Maintaining a healthy belly is crucial to keeping your immune system healthy.

Why am I on a Kefir Soda kick?  Because it’s

  • all about the probiotics
  • rich in B1, B6, B12
  • an awesome source of right-rotating lactic acid, which is really important in cancer prevention and heart health
  • bubbly
  • low-sugar (the grains eat the sugar in the fermentation process)
  • delicious

And SO easy to make.  The only challenge, besides finding the space to store all of your soda :), is obtaining the grains.  I scored mine for free from a very random encounter but they can be bought online.  I’ve heard that the best source to buy them is at Cultures For Health.  They may seem a little expensive but they not only last forever, they multiply!

But really, does it taste good?

YES!

It is lightly sweet with a fine fizz, super tasty and refreshing.  The fermentation continues even after removing the grains so it gets less sweet, more fizzy, and a slight yeasty taste as time goes on.  The grape is the winner and coconut the loser but all of the flavors have turned out fantastic.

Time to paint!

Munchy Brunchy

Sunday brunch :).

My best frittata yet!

This baby was full of local eggs, onions, zucchini, mushrooms, Twin Oaks soysauge, nutmeg, and smoked paprika.

The food was delicious but the company was superb. Our friends Anna, Chase, and baby Arlie joined us for this spread.  I love the brunch party, I think we are going to start having them more often, image the delicious potential of a brunch potluck!

The theme of the weekend seems to be sharing food with friends, this was our third meal with friends of the weekend!  Love it!

Gym Update: I had the best time in a Pilates Reformer class yesterday!  I LOVE THE REFORMER but haven’t been on one since 2005 because of the high cost of lessons.  I still can’t believe that these classes are included in regular membership at ACAC, it’s pretty ridiculous.   Bring on 3x a week reformer classes!

If money is not an object I highly recommend getting yourself to a reformer lesson, it will do amazing things for your body.

Kefir Soda Update: WOW it’s delicious!  My first batch is fizzy and sooo good.  It is sweet, mildly grapey, and just the faintest hint fermented (think yeast, like beer, but very slight).

Kefir Water Soda has excellent benefits (besides being a super tasty, natural refreshment!)

  • Probiotics
  • Minerals including Potassium and chloride
  • High in vitamins B1, B6, B12

I shared some with Anna this morning and she was instantly converted into a Kefir Soda lover too!  She also brought me some vanilla from her recent trip to Mexico so my next batch is going to be a cream soda!  Mmmmmm

Anyone know what this contraption is used for?

If you guessed that it’s my new yogurt maker you’re invited to my next brunch party!

While in my friend Jessica‘s kitchen last night I spotted this baby sitting high atop the cabinets.  Jessica is dairy-free these days after realizing she’s intolerant so she gave the yogurt maker to me.  And made my night!

To be honest, my kitchen sink method has been producing really inconsistent results, I think because my kitchen is so cold.  I even looked at buying a yogurt maker but couldn’t bring myself to bring another appliance into our tiny kitchen.  But when it was handed to me by a dear friend it seemed meant to be :).

Time to go to the gym and burn off some of the coffee energy I have pulsing through me!
