Challenge is Good

One of the reasons I ADORE my husband is that he motivates and inspires me to to push myself physically.

Take yesterday for example.  I was heading out on a late morning run with a 3.5 mile loop planned and I asked him if he wanted to join me.  He said “I’ll be ready in 5”.  So away we trotted.  It was nearing noon and blazing freaking hot and humid as only the South knows how to be.  About 2 miles deep he suggested we run “O’Hill”, i.e. a 1.5 mile uphill climb in the opposite direction from home.

Now, I have no problem saying no to this marvelous man but he has a way with words.  Just as a myriad of excuses as to why I couldn’t possibly run any further was about to slip from my lips he said “we can walk the hill”.  Then I remembered that one of my goals for June was to push myself a little harder than usual in my workouts.  So up we slogged.  And up and up and up.

It wasn’t so hard-that’s not to say I didn’t walk the steepest hills-and our nearly 6 miles made me feel proud and strong.

He did the same thing with the marathon we ran two years ago.  We were out on a little jog and I was telling him about the half marathon I was about to sign up for.  I casually mentioned that the full marathon cost the same as the half.  His response? “Let’s run the marathon.”  (Yeah, we are a thrifty pair.)  Two months later we passed through the finish line holding hands.

Tate has inspired me to climb mountains, bike more, and turn 3 mile runs into marathons.  In other words, he is one of my great movement catalysts.

We all need people to help us challenge ourselves and to remind us that we are strong and capable of pushing ourselves just a little bit more.

Who’s your movement catalyst?

Turn Words into Action

Watch your thoughts, for they become words. Watch your words, for they become actions. Watch your actions, for they become habits. Watch your habits, for they become character. Watch your character, for it becomes your destiny.

-Tome Krause

My thoughts became my words and my words became my actions!

A few weeks ago I wrote a post about  lacking motivation and momentum in a few areas of my life.  I was ready to make a change and hoped that by putting my intentions out there into the cyberworld-and to all my blog friends-it would help kick my ass into gear.

It worked!

I have two exciting teaching opportunities coming up, new dance connections and performance opportunities, and a new training client!

On July 12th I start a six-week class at ACAC.  The Dance Hour is a modern dance based exercise class that will focus on getting a great full body workout and the amazing feeling of dancing.  Kath is already signed up and has requested we spend the last ~15 minutes of each class building a little bit of choreography and I love the idea!  By the end of the series we will have 2-3 minutes of choreography to really get us moving!  If you are in the Cville area and interested in joining us; the class is open to members and non-members, dancers and non-dancers.  Come on down! More info can be found on this ACAC page.

The lovely Robin Truxel is also interested in having me combine dance and exercise at her gorgeous Pilates studio, Tru Pilates.  We are currently gathering interest for a mat Pilates class that would incorporate Modern and Ballet technique.  C’villians, here’s more info!

I am super excited to get back into the studio and share two of my loves-dance and exercise-with Charlottesville.  Before I moved to Peru in 2009 I was teaching 6-9 classes each week and loved that each day I got to go into a studio and exercise with tons of awesome students.

I did hold some great spare-bedroom-turned-Pilates-studio classes in our apartment in Peru but it’s already been a year and a half since we left Lima!  Man, time flies!  Did June just sprint out the door for anyone else?  Friday is July!

And it’s already 10:30am!  Better sprint out the door myself before it gets too hot for my run!
