So Soda Crazy

“Rain, sleet, freezing rain, snow…”

Yep, still January!

I just got my butt kicked in Pilates Reformer class.  It was a new-to-me teacher and she was super tough, 2/3rds of the class was leg work! Ugh!  I love it though, I feel so amazing when I walk out of there, strong, lean, and flexible.

Someday I will teach Pilates Reformer and have access to Reformers all the time!

The training to teach Reformer is extensive and expensive so for now (well, once my gym membership is up next week) I will settle for teaching and doing Mat Pilates. 😦  (Which I also LOVE.)

It’s official.  I am obsessed with Water Kefir Soda.

One of the reasons I wanted to get to Ikea on Saturday was to pick up some bottles for my soda!

Vanilla on the left and grape on right.

Oh but wait, there’s more.

Yeah, it’s a little out of control.  For real.

That chunky stuff on the bottom right is ginger.  Mmmmmm homemade Ginger Ale.  I’ve also made Lemonade, Grape-Vanilla, and Coconut (yuck).

Wondering what’s the deal with this stuff?

It is a fermented soda made with Water Kefir Grains

These “grains” have the power to turn sugar water into a probiotic rich beverage.

Probiotics is a catchall term for thousands of live microorganisms that deliver a myriad of health benefits.  Basically it means that it is full of healthy, live bacteria that promotes gut health.  Maintaining a healthy belly is crucial to keeping your immune system healthy.

Why am I on a Kefir Soda kick?  Because it’s

  • all about the probiotics
  • rich in B1, B6, B12
  • an awesome source of right-rotating lactic acid, which is really important in cancer prevention and heart health
  • bubbly
  • low-sugar (the grains eat the sugar in the fermentation process)
  • delicious

And SO easy to make.  The only challenge, besides finding the space to store all of your soda :), is obtaining the grains.  I scored mine for free from a very random encounter but they can be bought online.  I’ve heard that the best source to buy them is at Cultures For Health.  They may seem a little expensive but they not only last forever, they multiply!

But really, does it taste good?

YES!

It is lightly sweet with a fine fizz, super tasty and refreshing.  The fermentation continues even after removing the grains so it gets less sweet, more fizzy, and a slight yeasty taste as time goes on.  The grape is the winner and coconut the loser but all of the flavors have turned out fantastic.

Time to paint!

Slop on a Sponge

Holy food!

Have you ever tried Ethiopian food?

My aunt calls it “slop on a sponge”, I call it delicious. 🙂

Tate and I pulled into D.C. yesterday afternoon right on time to meet my “big sister” (neighbor growing up), her husband, and year and a half old Cora at Dukem.  Like all good Ethiopian restaurants, the atmosphere was tacky, the prices were reasonable, and the food was eaten with our fingers.

We ordered the Vegetarian Supreme with a side middle of beef something-or-other.

17 piles of various veggie goodness!

If you are unfamiliar with the Ethiopian experience, here’s the rundown.  You usually order a few dishes or a combo meal.  The dishes are served on a huge injera bread, a giant fermented (like sourdough) pancake made from Teff flour, with a few injera on the side for scooping up the stews and salads.  If you are careful at scooping your fingers don’t actually touch the dishes and it’s not as messy as it sounds.

The flavors range from spicy to mildly sour with lots of lentils and oily sauces (similar to Indian in many ways).  It is one of my favorite types of foods to eat out because I have no desire to cook it! The best part is having so many different flavors in one meal and I actually love eating with my fingers.

We left lunch stuffed (and didn’t even finish the tray), in fact I really overeat for the first time in a long time.  I think the injera expands in your stomach!

Those of you on the East coast may remember that yesterday was a cold one!  We considered skipping our trip for a minute but we are glad we went because the sun came out mid-afternoon and it was a chilly but lovely day on the Mall.

There were even people playing Ultimate Frisbee in front of the Capital.

YIKES! Talk about a fashion “Don’t”!

The Air and Space Museum, The National Gallery, and The Natural History Museum filled up our afternoon.

My favorite exhibit was the Contemporary Art in The National Gallery.

This one was both Tate and I’s favorite ↓ (it was huge!)

We were a little concerned about which part was “fanny” painted…

It was also fun to see the Hope Diamond at The Natural History Museum

It’s so cool to think about the nearly 400 years of history for this gem!

We hit Ikea on the way to Fredricksburg and YOWZA, that place is insane!  I made it out of there down $124 and with a car full of goodies!

I won an award last night!  I’ll tell you all about it tomorrow morning.  For now, have a lovely day!
